Negro Expression Essay What does Zora Neal Hurston identify as the Characteristics of Negro Expression? In 1933, Zora Neil Hurston wrote Characteristics of Negro Expression to frame the Negro or African-American as she saw him. She saw the results of the Great Migration as terrifying and spasmodic, unbearably inhumane and devastating to those left behind. For Hurston, rural black people were being forgotten; disappearing amidst the heady enthusiasm of the urban New Negro Movement. In Hurstons essay she describes the different concepts of what it meant to be a black American in the South. She sees the new Negro as encompassing theses elements: being dramatic, having the will to adorn, being angular, asymmetrical, dancing, folkloric, having originality, mimicry, non-reserve, having a peculiar dialect, and hanging out at the jook or pleasure house. These are just a few of the compositional elements used to described the forgotten Negro in the south. By reexamining Hurstons essay, critiques will have a proper understanding of these social characteristics and will have a better understanding of the African-American in relation to his identity. Hurston was part of the Talented Tenth, an elite group of well educated African-American professionals who argued that the mission of establishing black identity and thus gaining social acceptance and economic and political stability would be vitally strengthened through arts and letters. Hurstons work and criticism have helped to shape the manner in which black American artists and academics view themselves. Also how they emphasize humanness inherent in black people through referencing the diversity of voices and talents in black America in the South, as well as their essential connection through legacy to the African continent. Hurston begins her essay with the first characteristic of the southern Negro expression Drama, in which she describes almost every phase of African-American existence as being highly dramatized(Hurston 296), She further states that No matter how joyful or how sad the case there is sufficient poise for drama (Caponi 294). To this end, Hurston realizes that African-Americans and their daily experiences are in time and history,  dramatic collective repetitions that are repeated and multiplied many times in many art forms, but why?. As African-Americans live, most naturally leave a mark on most things they come in contact with. For example, Picasso was dramatically influenced by African people and their art on his trip to Africa. His trip was the precursor to the formation of Cubism. Consequently this clearly demonstrates that the African and his presence, usually dramatic, is a phenomenon of their being in the universe, in which other wish to document. (Gottchild 13) In the section on Will to Adorn, Hurston sees the African-American as reinventing the English language to suit himself and having his revision accepted by the southern ruling class white man. Hurston views the greatest of this revision as the use of metaphors and similes (thats a rope), the double descriptive (high-tall), verbal nouns (funeralize) and nouns from verbs (she wont take listen). Hurston argues that whatever African-Americans do in violation to the normalcy of life he beautifies. Writer and dance enthusiast commented in Brenda Gottchilds book African-Americans blend the impossible and create beauty (Gottchild 14). This beautification, this revisioning is then accepted by white Americans and assimilated into their vernacular ( Hurston 301). The impact of Asymmetry, Dancing and Folklore are discussed as the next  three characteristics of Negro expression. In Asymmetry Hurston looks into African art and comments that the sculpture and carvings of the African-American artist are full of beauty and at the same time lack symmetry. Additionally, she sees this characteristic encompassing literature, poetry and dancing. Hurston states It is the lack of symmetry which makes Negro dancing so difficult for white dancers to learn (297). Gottchild concurs with Hurston stating Movement may emanate from any part of the body, and two or more centers may operate simultaneously. For example, African-American dance may seem difficult at times but most poses give the impression that the dancer will do much more. In most art forms the African-American is not trying to do all that is conceivable, he is merely giving a realistic suggestion of what is possible. Nothing shows what is possible more than African-Americans willingness to adapt folklore to suit his own use. While most people view folklore as a thing of the past, Hurston examines folklore as something still in the making and talks about the cultural roles of God, the Devil, John Henry and Jack, the greatest culture hero of the south. In the framework of her story Jack has the ability to outsmart the Devil when it seems that God is absolutely no match for him (Hurston 299). Jacks ability to outwit the Devil places him in the company of other prominent culture icons. To this end, Hurston is able to show that African folklore is not works of imitation but innovation. By recognizing the characteristics of Negro expression, Hurston identifies in her essay an understanding that if black artist are to have anything in their own image and according to their own views, African-Americans will have to have a say in which plays, dances, and folklore are in those images. The final characteristics that Hurston focuses on are: Originality, Imitation, Absence of the Concept of Privacy and The Jook. According to Hurston the African-American is the most copied individual on the face of the planet yet it is still said that he lacks originality. His art, music, plays and style are subjects of examination and commodification. Hurston argues, While he lives and moves in the midst of white civilization, everything he touches is reinterpreted for his own use (Hurston 310). In  terms of Imitation the African-American is not an imitator but a duplicator. If he chooses to imitate, it is because he wishes to and not because he wished to be like the one imitated. Historically, there is no Concept of Privacy in the African village. So it is believed that African-Americans kept nothing secret. Thus he keeps nothing in reserve and every aspect of his life is shared with his communal and biological family. Hurstons essay is important because while framing the architecture of the forgotten African-Americans in the South, she retells the narrative of the African men and women which sought to be original in every form of art. She provides her readers with a true representation of the social characteristics of the African-American culture in the South. Hurston directly puts them in the open for all to critique. Hurstons essay gives the reader a clear picture of African-Americans living in the South during the Harlem Renaissance, as well as, their forgotten identity and connects their traits neatly to many African art genres we see today.

In the newspaper article Cathy ODowd clearly tries to make the reader believe that she did the right thing. She identifies this in the sub heading she faced a brutal choice: to risk her own life in a doomed rescue, noticeably the word doomed shows there was a severe risk of danger in any rescue attempt. I believe that in a way writing this article has allowed Cathy ODowd to exorcise some of her guilt, Cathy wants to explain her experience in full and get the reader to empathise with her. Finally, it may also be possible that Cathy wants to show the story in a feminine perspective. The article does undoubtedly give many good reasons why not to attempt to save Fran. But I am not completely shore that they had no choice but to leave Fran. The fact that there were nine people on the mountain and that together they couldnt even try to help rescue Fran is rather peculiar. I dont know what others would do, but I would at least try to help, rather than to just leave her to die. Also, Cathy states that they had been with Fran for nearly an hour pondering over what to do, this completely wastes time and any chances of saving her. Cathy is in a moral dilemma, and I believe the moral thing to do would be to attempt a rescue. The three Uzbek climbers that left her oxygen and supposedly tried to help saw Fran the day before this incident. She must have been in a better state then, and all they do is just leave a canister of oxygen. The Uzbek climbers then stay with the rest of the group and Fran, and help to watch Ian and Jangbu to see what decision they took, this is just more evidence of time being wasted and therefore lowering Frans chances of survival. In conclusion I believe that to live Fran to die was not the only choice they had. As I said, the morally correct thing to do would be to of least attempted a rescue, rather than to fritter away time.

Her father was a wealthy landowner and an Illinois senator who did not object to his daughter’s choice to further her education, but who wanted her to have a traditional life. For years after his death, Addams tried to reconcile the family role she was expected to play with her need to achieve personal fulfillment. Jane was born into a rich family and could have very easily become a housewife with few worries. As a little girl, she once tried on a beautiful coat and asked her father, John Addams, if she could wear it to church. Jane’s father advised her to wear an old cloak instead, which would keep here warm without making the other girls at Sunday school feel badly about their own clothes. He added that, "it was very stupid to wear the sort of clothes that made it harder to have equality even (in church.)" John Addams was a rich man who was respected by his neighbors and practically worshipped by Jane. Although he was not a member of any particular religious sect, he helped build the first Methodist Church in Cedarville, Ill., and the area’s first library was housed in the Addams’ home. A miller by trade, he invested in railroads, helped construct a school for area children and was a founder of the Second National Bank of Freeport. When he sought a Senate seat as a Whig in 1854, he easily won and was elected seven more times as a Republican. Sarah Addams died on January 14, 1863, when Jane was only a girl. Her father remarried in 1867 to a widow named Anna Hostetter Haldeman, who had two sons that John Addams raised as if they were his own. The new couple fought a great deal over money and... ...She died as one of the most respected women in American history on May 21, 1935. She never married and apparently never had a romantic relationship with a man. Today, modern scholars debate whether or not Addams ever had an intimate relationship with Mary Rozet Smith or other women at Hull House, but the question has never been definitively resolved. While Addams was a great organizer and reformer, it must be noted that she had the help of several ambitious women at Hull House who were progressive thinkers in their own right. Furthermore, she would have never been able to achieve so much without the many donations that she was able to secure from philanthropists. Today, the 13 buildings that surrounded the Hull House settlement have been destroyed, but the original mansion still stands as a museum. However, even though he claims that his film is patterned after the novel, Coppola still could not help but put his own twist on the novel by sensualizing the story and adding a love story between Dracula and Mina. By adding a romantic subplot, Coppola makes the viewers feel sympathy for the evil Dracula when he is finally killed at the hand of his loved one. Also, the character of Mina turns from heroine in the novel to victim in the movie by having her fall in love with Dracula. Coppola changes the original story of Dracula in the film adaptation in many ways by the addition of a love story between Dracula and Mina. In the film adaptation of Dracula, the origins of the title character are explained to provide a motive for the love obsession between the title character and his lover. In the film, Dracula is said to be the notorious prince of Romania known as Vlad the Impaler. This idea stems from a theory that Bram Stoker actually patterned the character of Dracula after a real prince of Romania named Voivode. The movie shows that after a very bloody battle in 1463 against the Turks, Prince Vlad came back to his castle in Transylvania to find that his adored Elisabeta (played by Winona Ryder) had committed suicide. Dracula says, â€Å"I, Dracula, Voivode of Transylvania, will arise from my own death to avenge hers with all the powers of darkness!† He condemns God and makes a pact with the devil to become immortal by feeding on other ... ...f Dracula’s birth into the world of the undead lays the foundation for the love affair between Dracula and Mina. However, the love story changes the characters of Dracula and Mina drastically from the novel. In the film, Dracula is a character with whom the viewer sympathizes while in the novel he is feared. Mina’s character is strong willed in the novel while in the film she is weak and pathetic. Coppola’s adaptation destroys the characterization of the novel, taking away from Stoker’s image for the novel. The Struggle Struggle is when you make forceful efforts to get free of a restraint. Usually something critical happens that causes you to struggle frequently. This critical thing can happen over time, or it can happen all of a sudden. Frequently struggling usually leads to depression, the same way that struggling can keep you depressed. Everything has to happen for a reason, and in this case struggling was the reasoning for depression. Since the beginning of his wanting to go to a very academic school, Craig studied crazily like.He studied so much that one of the times he went to his room to study â€Å"[he] got comfortable with [his] room for the first time. † Most depressed people like to stay in their room for a long time because they want to isolate themselves. Studying for three hours a day in his room, is one the things that allowed himself to isolate himself, even though it was not intentional. He, like many other depressed people felt safe somewhere, and for him, it wa s his room.When you cannot do anything about your struggle you tend to panic and/or stress which can dead to long term physical and/or mental pain. Most people who throw up are sick, but there are certain people who vomit because they are stressed and Craig is one of them. Within months of his new school, which is one of the hardest high schools there are, he had stress vomited. Craig stress vomiting is very significant in It's Kind of a Funny Story because it is when all his struggling begins. It usually shows that that person is not strong as to how they came off to be.Towards the beginning of the kook, Craig had everything together, which is usually other people's lives are as well, but as more goes on to their plate as they can chew, they vomit and it shows that they are struggling. This conveys that every person who has stress vomited because of all the things they had to handle, really believed they were that person, someone who could do everything with ease. Struggling someti mes makes you lose control, so it may seem like you are in control, but in reality you are Just pretending to be.Since Craig has trouble digesting is food he has to tell himself he is â€Å"still in control of [his] mind and [he] has medication and [he] is going to make this happen† (37-38). If anyone is taking medication for something that they cannot control, like Craig eating abilities, it means that they are already no longer in control of their mind. Craig thinking that he is still in control conveys that he has found taking medication a normal thing, that it is no longer something that sets him apart from others.When you think of someone who takes medication to help them with depression along with other things, you hint their name and you think depression and medication along with them. It has become one with them. Craig became depressed because he was continuously struggling with simple things and harsh things that were a struggle. It can be predicted that over time Cr aig will come out of his depression when he gets out of his comfort zone, when he actually does something about one of his struggles. He will learn how to do that with all struggles and that will slowly end his depression.

Lessons I Learned Through Personal Experience Essay

The following stories show the lessons I learned through personal experiences. Growing up in Berkeley Springs and moving to Cumberland pushes me to adapt to change, meet new people and find my personality. As I go through each grade a new lesson is learned, some more important than others. Every experience shown in the following vignettes shapes how I will succeed in the future Elementary School Trust and feelings took up the majority of my elementary. These were the years I learned that you should trust people, but you still have to watch your back. Some people’s decisions will completely shock you, and some of your decisions may completely shock others. Second Grade My uncle John was like my older brother when I was little. He was always there to play video games with and has a lot of fun. One day I heard my mom on the phone talking about John having to go to the hospital. â€Å"What’s wrong with him† I repetitively whispered to my mom while she was still talking. My mom gets off the phone and tells me my uncle was bit by a tick and not doing well at all. My family and I went to the hospital and it felt like we waited forever to see my uncle. We lied about my age so the people working there would let me see him. I heard doctors talking about how his heart rate was really low and that his chances were not good. I ran over to the side of his bed giving him a huge hug as best as I could. It was then that I made my decision, I would never go into the woods again. Third Grade This is the year my life as I knew it would change. My mom told me we were moving to Cumberland to live with the man she was going to marry. In my mind, I was thinking about everything I was going to miss. My entire family lived in Berkeley Springs and all of my friends would be left there too. I felt like I wouldn’t know what to do in a new school and state with all new people and only really knowing my mom.
